Masterpiece Crazy Quilt

by Elisabeth on August 5, 2013

My Mom! I’m convinced she’s pretty much the best one out there. She’s set the bar high for her daughters on how to be a great mom and Proverbs 31 woman. She calls us all the time to check in on us, hangs out with us (and is one of our dearest friends), prays for us and her grandchildren’s hearts to be changed by the Lord and gives us of herself, time and talent more than she probably should.

So… when my sister and sister-in-law were pregnant with their first children, she decided to make her first grandchildren quilts! Little did she know this would become a gift she’d bestow upon all 10 (so far) of her grand babies! All of the quilts have been unique and beautiful. I hope to share pictures of all of them someday. And they’ve all been something that she’s been kind enough to include her extremely different and picky daughters in. I’m positive that I’ve been her worst and most picky daughter (I like to blame this on the fact that I’m much like my mother’s artsy side of the family and ended up being a graphic designer, which is also her fault because she herself passed these genes along to me right?!?). Anyhow, back to the quilt!

I found out back in August 2012 that I was pregnant and then a few months later that it was a girl (Alice). I’d been dreaming about a nursery for her since before I had kids and knew I wanted it to be a fairytale theme, very lush and to have a timeless antiquey feel! So naturally, I would choose a fairytale-themed crazy quilt (ever wonder why they received the name crazy?) made from silk velvet (which is supposedly one of the most difficult fabrics to work with). I’m thankful to the Lord that my mom did NOT go crazy during the making of this quilt. She is still quite sane. Yippee!

Here’s the quilt and miss Alice!!!

Masterpiece Crazy Quilt 3

It’s nothing but stunning! I love it, and love it for Alice, and for all of my grand babies, and Alice’s grand babies that I envision getting to use it and admire it too. Most of the quilt is made out of silk velvet and was hand dyed by Rebecca at Rebecca’s in old town. I had the honor of meeting and designing for Rebecca while I worked at Gardner Design. She was kind enough to let me rummage through and sell me some remnants of her beautiful work. If you haven’t been into Rebecca’s you should (her work is pretty fabulous)! The rest of the quilt is made out of fabrics we picked up here and there and vintage ties. Then my sister, aunt “9″ and I embroidered a few “tales” onto pieces and my mother slaved away embroidering and sewing the masterpiece together. It only took a few months before and a few months after Alice came to complete it!

Thank you Momma for being wonderful and for blessing us not only with things we don’t really “need” (like Alice’s Masterpiece Crazy Quilt) but with yourself. You are irreplaceable and I love you!

Hairy Merry Christmas Card

by Elisabeth on November 15, 2011

If only we could trump last year’s Christmas card… sigh! I’ve been racking my brain for a almost a year now and have decided there’s nothing we can ever do to match it.

Last year we had Finley, the hairiest headed white baby many had ever seen. So while driving to Kansas City last October we had an epiphany – “Hairy Merry Christmas” – and the idea was born! This year there hasn’t been an epiphany yet, but we’ll be headed to KC tomorrow and I’m hoping to have one (it will never trump last year’s, but I’m hoping to have one). If you have one (an idea) for us, please share. :)

Happy Halloween!

by Elisabeth on November 1, 2011

I hope you had a great Halloween! We had a party that very few could make it to tonight. :/ But it was fun nonetheless.

cupcakesWe made pumpkin cupcakes that we have many leftovers of. Too bad I’ll have to eat them all! You can get the recipe here. And my wonderful mother made super yummy potato soup.

FinleyClown2011sFinley was clown this year to go along with the “Circus” theme. Fitting!

FinleyClown2011_2sYou see, there’s a theme every year with my sister’s kids and my cousin’s little girl. Photos of all of them to come!

The poor children had to sit for several photo ops. It always gives me a greater appreciation for photographers when I try (and fail miserably) to get just one good shot.

We had so much fun! One highlight for me was watching this girl play.

She was full of smiles and adventure all day.

And… Diego’s big jump! I always feel blessed hanging out with my fun family.

Have you been to get pumpkins yet? Do you have a favorite patch? I’d love to try a new one next year!

Fill me! Use me!

by Elisabeth on October 13, 2011

I’ve been feeling discouraged and frustrated with myself lately because I feel like I’ve wasted valuble time over the past 28 years. I feel like I should have so much more knowledge of the Bible and more of it hidden in my heart than I do. I believe the devil is using these thoughts of my wasting time to discourage me. Then tonight, I’m reading this weeks notes from BSF and I read exactly what I needed to. BSF

notes question: “Are you patient while God prepares you for an unknown future ministry?” God is so faithful to give us exactly what we need at the time we need it. Thank you Father for words of encouragement. Please prepare me for whatever future ministry You might have and use me to Your glory in the meantime.

Yard Sale / Garage Sale

by Elisabeth on October 5, 2011

If you see this sign Thursday and don’t stop by… you are probably a smart person, because I don’t have my stuff together! My sister and I are putting together a yard sale and, well, we’re going to have signs. Hahaha. If you have nothing going on Thursday and would like to rummage through my marked (by marked, I mean unmarked) treasures, come on by.

Late Nights

October 3, 2011

So, I’ve been having a few late nights recently. Why, you ask? Because that’s when I work best! I guess it’s from years of working late nights at Gardner Design. I’m stronger for it, right? Ha! Anyhow, I’ve been updating my website (aka. my portfolio). Check it out, let me know what you think, and […]

Sneak Peek – Owl

September 27, 2011

I’ve been working on a new series of illustrations and would like an opinion (besides my husbands). Do you like the owl with or without the border and trees? This is very important and will end up affecting the future of the series. ; )

Woodland Birthday Party

September 12, 2011

One month ago we celebrated Finley’s 1st birthday! Here are a few (o/k, maybe more than a few) pictures. We/I decided on a woodland gnome theme because, well, I’m obsessed. I had tons of fun designing and painting Finley’s woodland party invite. Anything with toadstools, owls, squirrels, and gnomes has to be fun right??? Woodland […]

This past weekend we celebrated Finley’s 1st birthday! I can’t believe it’s been a year already. It’s amazing how fast a year can fly by. Anyway, here are monthly pictures of Finley from his first year. We thank God daily for blessing us with our little guy. Life is such a sweet gift!
